Gerrard: Real Madrid wanted to get me into a war with Liverpool

Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has recalled the past and spoke of the time he was close to moving to Real Madrid.

The Spanish newspaper AS published statements to Gerrard in which he stated that Real Madrid wanted to contract him in 2009 after the team beat Real Madrid in Anfield by a four-way without reply and maximum of the Champions League.

"Real Madrid wanted me to go to war with Liverpool to leave and go to play for Real Madrid," said Gerrard.

Former Liverpool player Jamie Carragher responded to Gerrard's comments on The Great Game: "I remember that captain, Raul Gonzalez said to you, "Will you come?"

"I don't know if it's a real show, but it was kind of a flirt," Gerrard said in response to Carragher.

The former England international also reported that Jose Mourinho tried to hire him for Chelsea and was close to going to the London team.
